Larry Houchin was born and raised in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. He played on the 1967 College-High basketball team which was inducted into the Bartlesville Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. Houchin was also and avid golfer and loved to play at Hillcrest Country Club, often telling people that if he could only play one course it would be Hillcrest.
After graduating from OU Larry made his home in Tulsa and was a successful stockbroker and businessman. When the Bartlesville Sports Commission was formed in 2007 Larry was asked to serve on the initial Board of Directors although he was a Tulsa resident. After Larry’s untimely death in 2010 the BSC established a scholarship for the local high school in Larry’s name. Because of his attitude for fairness and his attitude for competition the scholarship is presented to the Bartlesville High School senior who has exemplified the best “sportsmanship” throughout the year.
To help raise money to support this fund a golf outing is scheduled at Hillcrest each year and people are invited to play on one of Larry’s favorite courses. Donations are taken at the golf outing and through the generosity of so many of Larry’s friends the scholarship fund is very healthy.
